Andrea Boito

MArch MEng PhD ARB

Andrea co-founded Boito Sarno Architects, after completing many complex residential, education and retail projects, working for British and Italian award-winning practices. He is a registered architect in the UK and in Italy.

He is visiting lecturer at the University of Padua in Italy and at the University of Yaoundé in Cameroon. In December 2021 he was awarded a Research Grant by the University of Padua. He is focusing on the structuralist movement and its relevance to the architectural language of low carbon architecture and the circular economy, particularly timber frames and design for disassembly.

With Sir Michael Hopkins, he delivered the RIBA National Award winning music school for King's College School in Wimbledon, a highly crafted building where he achieved exceptional quality of detailing by working closely on site with the contractor.

At Renzo Piano Building Workshop, he worked on the former Falck steel factory site in Milan.

Other projects include residential schemes in India, an exhibition hall for Padua University astrophysical observatory, a large office refurbishment in Milan, a mixed-use tower in Mongolia and retail projects for Apple in Milan, Rome and Florence.

He moved to the UK in 2011. He graduated in Architecture from Milan Polytechnic University having previously completed a degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Padua. He also holds a PhD from the University of Bologna, with a thesis on social housing and urban densification in Milan, London and São Paulo.

Matteo Sarno

MA(Hons) PG Dip ARB RIBA

Matteo co-founded Boito Sarno Architects after working as a project architect in London for over a decade. He is a registered architect in the UK and in Italy. 

He has specialist knowledge of sustainable design, both for new build and retrofit of listed buildings. As a member of the Architects Climate Action Network, he has focused on whole-life carbon, co-authoring a report on embodied carbon that advocates ambitious amendments to the building regulations.

Matteo teaches a post-graduate design studio at the University of Westminster, and has been a technical tutor at the University of Cambridge.

With Sir Michael Hopkins, he led a team of architects delivering a landmark scheme in Hyde Park Corner, combining high-end apartments and a hotel.

With Sir Richard MacCormac, he worked on the design and construction of a new quadrangle for St. John’s College Oxford, an innovative office building, residential, artist studios and student accommodation developments.

With 5th studio, he worked on an extension to a grade I listed College Hall and Chapel in Oxford as well as on the decarbonisation strategy for several colleges.

Having moved to the UK from Milan with a scholarship to study at UWC Atlantic College, he graduated in architecture at Edinburgh University and continued his studies at UCL and the University of Westminster.

He worked as a researcher at Wallpaper magazine, contributed to the Royal Academy Summer Show, and curated installations at Milan’s Salone del Mobile and at the V&A.
